If you live in the Midwest, specifically (Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Michigan, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Missouri, Ohio, Kansas, Iowa, Kentucky, Nebraska, Indiana) you have probably heard or maybe even shopped at a Menards store. For those of you in the other 36 states, Menards is the third largest Home Improvement store in the United States and that’s not really a shocker because it is only located in the midwest. However, that may be a good thing because, those of you who have never shopped at Menards, whether because you don’t live in a state that has one or you are a devoted Home Depot shopper, you have saved yourself from the horror of purchasing from this store. These are the top 5 reasons you should never step foot in a Menards store.
- They treat their employees like crap.
Every employer has the tendency to do wrong to their employees every once and awhile. Menards, however, does this often. They make you do the work of four people but pay you a lowly $9.35/hr for you to be part time and work full-time hours. If you don’t get the work done you’ll either be written up or suspended for 3 days (unpaid). I don’t know about you but if I’m scheduled 5 hours and am asked to put away 7 pallets of freight, downstock, inventory, clean/face, complete 3 to-do lists, and help “guests” I would ask to be paid more or I walk. And if I don’t get all of that done I definitely shouldn’t be written up for it. Also, the managers have to work 12-14 hours a day most of the time going in and working 10am-10pm and then going back the next morning at 6:30am. Another thing is that Menards wants you to know you are replaceable.
2. Horrible Product
The one way Menards keep costs down besides making one person do the work of four people is the cheap, piece of crap products they sell. They tell their employees to be confident when selling the product even though you know the product is terrible. Menards finds the cheapest vendor with the worst product and throws it on the shelf and tells you it’s guaranteed to last you a long time. That’s not the case, most of the time, the product breaks after the first use. They are all about “guest” service but willingly selling crappy products is horrible customer service in my eyes.
3. Gas Powered Items
Never purchase a gas powered item from Menards. It is guaranteed to not work when you get it home. Also, when that happens, don’t even think about trying to return it. If you put gas in a gas powered item purchased from Menards you will have to take it to a service center to get it fixed. Most of the time the service centers are 30-60 minutes away from the store as well. Making you waste even more time and money. On top of that, Menards won’t even pay to have it repaired. The cost comes right out of your pocket if you decided not to purchase one of their joke of a protection plan.
If you walk into Menards you will most definitely have to wait 30-45 minutes to get any help because there is only one or two people working in each department that are nowhere to be found. Menards corporate office only allows about a 1/4 of the amount of payroll each store actually needs. So every time you walk in be prepared to wait to get help. Although, if you really need that much help that you’re wiling to wait that long you must not have done your research before stepping in the building so you have no business being there anyway.
5. Don’t give a crap about Military Personnel or Senior Citizens.
Menards will only pay to have two motorized carts in the store for senior citizens and most of their client base during the week is seniors. Menards will also not work with you on providing you a military or senior discount. There reason behind this is because they already have the lowest prices in town. The only reason you have the lowest prices in town is because the other home improvement stores in the area wouldn’t even think about selling the horrible products you do. Support the people who serve our country and definitely be more friendly to the senior citizens. We all know they are the ones with the most money to spend anyway.
Now that you have those five reasons to never shop at a Menards store, please, for the love of god, take this advise to heart. You will be seriously disappointed when you walk in there after reading this. Trust me when I say, Menards does not care about you or the employees. They are only greedy for the money you spend. Do NOT contribute to this business’ success. John Menard, I hope you read this and realize that you need to change a lot before your business is worth walking into let alone shopping at.
